I coach high school soccer in the fall. Unfortunately, sometimes we run a bit behind in our travels to an away match. Generally, I’m sitting in the front of the bus, take a look at my watch and realize that we aren’t going to make it on time. At this point, I turn around and tell the players, in my most authoritative voice, that they need to be “ready to go” when the bus arrives. Essentially, I expect them to have their uniforms, their shin guards, their socks and shoes on when they walk off the bus. I should mention that at this point I’m fighting to be heard over the noise generated by a bus full of twenty-something teenage boys, most engaged in conversation. The results of my directive are typically unimpressive.
